► FORCE MAJEURE3

“As architects, we always start with an architectural analysis, looking at plans and the 3D model, searching for proportions, patterns and design rules. Soon we discovered a hidden meta-layer connecting the unique structure to the social situation we currently have to suffer. Worldwide.

First the historical context:
The Beffroi was built in the 1920s which were known for insatiable economy, inflation and poverty on the one side and immeasurable wealth on the other. It was constructed to replace a collapsed structure. Economical struggles and the collapse of known structures might be what will await us in this decade.

Then there is the structural context, which is a strong contrast between the past and today.
There is a huge gap between the size of the structure and the attention to details. The architect of the structure, Emile Dubuisson, mastered the balance between enormous and extraordinary proportions and the composition of the smallest elements, which create the bigger picture. They add up to more than the sum. Today, in these uncertain times, we get confronted with huge gestures on the one hand, ignorance and/or neglection of detail on the other. This concerns politics, economics, universities, environmental protection measures, current investor-centered architecture and various other subjects.

We want to underline this contrast between the whole and the single entity and the stability and fragility. We honor the architect’s vision and his sensitivity. Willing to emphasize the importance of the detail and the highlight that the whole is being more than the sum of its parts. Putting the focus on both: micro and macro.”
